What Do CBD Vapes Taste Like? It’s Dealer’s Choice

The most popular CBD product available today is CBD oil. It takes effect quickly when administered sublingually (under the tongue), but it can be added to food and beverages as well.

CBD oil has a distinctive flavour. It’s earthy, grassy, and somewhat bitter, and many users find it distasteful. It may be tempered by the taste of the carrier oil the CBD is mixed with, but it’s still memorable —and not in a good way, at least according to most users.

Those who’ve used CBD oil understandably wonder if CBD vapes have the same relatively unpleasant flavour. And the answer should make them happy: not usually.

CBD oil and CBD vapes have only one thing in common — CBD. Contrary to popular belief, the vapes don’t contain CBD oil; in fact, you should never vape the oil. When heated, the carrier oils used to make CBD oil generate hazardous vapor that can cause lung inflammation or a serious form of pneumonia.

Only specially created CBD vape juice, sold online and in many shops that specialize in CBD products, can be vaped. Instead of a carrier oil, vape liquids contain a food-safe carrier base. Vegetable glycerin or propylene glycol are most often used for that purpose, and they contribute a slightly sweet flavour to the liquid.

That’s not the only added ingredient found in CBD vape juice. Most producers add flavourings that offer consumers a huge choice; there are fruity flavours galore, along with more traditional options like menthol and mint. Some companies instead add terpenes, the plant components responsible for cannabis scents and tastes, to mimic the flavours of popular weed strains.

You may find unflavoured vape liquids sold by some vendors; those will have the distinctive grassy taste that characterizes most CBD oils. But those are the exceptions; the flavour of CBD vapes almost always depends on the user’s choice of vape juice.

What Is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of more than 100 plant compounds known as cannabinoids that are found in both hemp and cannabis plants. CBD is one of the two most important cannabinoids, and psychoactive THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the other. They each appear to provide substantial health and wellness benefits, but while THC intoxicates users, cannabidiol does not.

CBD products (like CBD oil and CBD vape juice) contain the cannabidiol extracted from hemp plants. There’s a good reason for that; hemp contains lots of CBD and very little THC, so cannabidiol sourced from the plants doesn’t make users high. (Cannabis plants, as you’d probably guess, are just the opposite: lots of THC and very little CBD.)

When CBD is extracted, other plant components come along with it — including hemp’s small amount of THC. None of those compounds are usually removed, because they all work together in a so-called“entourage effect” to boost cannabidiol’s effectiveness. The extracted CBD is called full-spectrum CBD because it contains the entire spectrum of hemp’s plant compounds.

However, not all people can consume THC, even though it isn’t intoxicating in such small amounts. Some are allergic to it, while others worry about the THC triggering a positive cannabis drug test. (That’s rare, but it can happen.)

Producers accommodate those users by further processing full-spectrum cannabidiol to create two other types of CBD products.

  • Broad-spectrum CBD has had its THC removed, although slight traces of the cannabinoid may still remain.
  • CBD isolate has had all of the other plant compounds removed, leaving pure CBD.

Those options are less effective because there’s less of an entourage effect in broad-spectrum CBD and none at all in CBD isolate. They’re suitable for use by those who must avoid THC, however.

If CBD doesn’t get you high, why use it? In three words, apparent medical benefits. Preliminary research has shown that cannabidiol may help ease many conditions including stress, anxiety, and depression; chronic pain; neurodegenerative diseases; insomnia; acne; cardiovascular risks; and even some types of cancer.

What are Vapes?

Vapes (short for vaporizers) were first created as an alternative to smoking. Instead of burning tobacco, vaporizers heated either tobacco or a flavoured liquid to a lower temperature. The process created less-hazardous vapor instead of smoke.

The devices became popular early in the 2000s and remain popular today. Over time, vaporizers were modified and updated to facilitate the smoking of marijuana or liquids produced from cannabis; eventually, they became popular as delivery devices for cannabidiol as well.

Most of today’s CBD vapes are small, modern devices known as vape pens (understandably, because they’re shaped much like a pen). Larger and more complicated vaporizers can be used as well, but the vast majority of users prefer the pens or small box-shaped devices, which can easily fit into a pocket or purse.

CBD vapes have four basic components. The atomizer is a heating element; the battery powers the atomizer; the tank, cartridge, or pod holds CBD vape liquid; and the mouthpiece is used to inhale. Operation is simple; there’s usually an activation button, the atomizer heats the liquid to a temperature that generates vapor, and the user inhales the vapor through the mouthpiece.

When someone decides to try vaping CBD, they can choose from two common devices. One is a reusable vape pen; users regularly purchase bottles of vape liquid and refill the pen’s tank whenever it runs low. The other is a less-expensive disposable vape, which contains a supply of CBD liquid and is simply thrown away when the pen is empty.

Smoking has become taboo in most societies, and many view vaping through the same lens. It’s a personal decision for users whether they want to try vaping CBD, and there’s evidence that the practice may eventually cause some damage to the lungs. However, it’s been proven that vaping is much safer than smoking, and most vapers experience few if any negative effects.

What Is CBD Vape Juice?

As mentioned at the start of this article, CBD oil and CBD vape juice are very different products. CBD oil should never be vaped, because when it’s heated, the carrier oil it contains produces vapor that’s hazardous to users.

CBD vape juice (also commonly called vape liquid, e-liquid, or e-juice) contains no oil; it’s produced specifically to be used in vape pens or vaporizers.

There’s cannabidiol in CBD vape liquid, naturally, and companies sell different versions of the juice so users can choose to vape full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate CBD. The other key ingredient is a base liquid, usually vegetable glycerin or propylene glycol. Both are food-safe ingredients used to make nicotine e-liquids and many other food and beverage products.

Vape juice with just those two ingredients is available from vendors (and it tastes much like CBD oil, grassy and rather unpleasant). It’s not very popular, though. You can also find CBD vape liquid that’s had nicotine added (to satisfy “regular” vapers), or juices with added cannabinoids, terpenes, or health and wellness ingredients. Those aren’t big sellers, either.

Flavourings are the additives that generally determine the popularity of the many varieties of CBD vape juice — and there is a wealth of choices available.

Choosing CBD Vape Liquid

There are only two decisions to be made when purchasing CBD vape juice. One is choosing the liquid’s strength. Dosing is a complicated matter when vaping CBD because each user inhales different amounts and inhales more or less frequently. The best idea is to start with the lowest potency available and increase as needed.

The other decision, which many people find more important, is the flavour of their CBD vape liquid. It’s not an easy decision, because there’s something for everyone. Each producer offers a different selection of flavours, and they fit into several general categories.

  • Fruit Flavours: A small sampling of available flavors includes apple, strawberry, lemon, grape, mango, raspberry, and tropical fruit.
  • Traditional Flavours: Some companies offer CBD vape juice in flavours like mint, menthol, tobacco, and hemp (which tastes similar to the natural flavour of CBD oil).
  • Designer Flavours: The only exotic flavours of vape liquid available are only limited by the imaginations of the producers. You may find caramel, vanilla ice, lemon meringue pie, cotton candy, blue raspberry, strawberry lemonade, and hundreds of other choices.
  • Cannabis Flavours: Some producers add specific combinations of terpenes to their CBD vape juices to replicate the tastes of popular weed strains. You can find vape liquids like Pineapple Express, Kush Mint, Super Lemon Haze, Girl Scout Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Sunset Sherbet, Super Lemon Haze, and dozens more, all with little or no THC content.

So, what do CBD vapes taste like? Essentially, whatever you want them to.

Why Vape CBD?

Some readers may be wondering why users would choose to vape CBD when other products like CBD oil or capsules seem to be easier to consume, and edibles would probably be tastier.

There are several reasons. One is that some people simply enjoy vaping, whether they consider it a satisfying substitute for a one-time smoking habit or find it to be an enjoyable social activity to vape with friends.

There are more practical reasons for vaping, however.

Most methods of consuming CBD are inefficient. CBD oil added to food or beverages, CBD capsules, and CBD edibles must be processed in the GI system before the cannabidiol is released to be used by the body. Digestion can take as long as two hours and much of the cannabinoid is lost in the process, meaning those methods are slow and deliver less CBD.

The cannabidiol contained in vapor goes straight into the lungs when it’s inhaled, and it’s then quickly absorbed by the lung tissues. That minimizes the amount of time it takes for the CBD to take effect, and much more of it is available for use by the body. The only method that’s comparable is dropping CBD oil under the tongue.

For many users, particularly those who already vape other substances, vaping CBD is the easiest, most effective — and perhaps the most enjoyable — way to consume cannabidiol.
